In a recent developer update for the long awaited game The Long Dark, we were given the release date and some gameplay details. The title has been in Early Access since late 2014 and fans have been more than ready to see the story mode and final product. WARNING: This article may contain small spoilers regarding story content.
Developer Hinterland Studios’ choice to release the following information in the form of a countdown has caused a lot of upheaval. Nonetheless, the Early Access players still seem excited for what’s to come on August 1st, 2017. Season One will be released in an episodic format with the story mode known as “Wintermute”. Players will have access to 2 out of 5 episodes upon release. Though 2 episodes sounds lacking, Hinterland promises a good 6-10 hours worth of gameplay.
On top of all this, before the end of Early Access, we are apparently going to see another big sandbox update released. The price for The Long Dark has also been increased to 34.99$ USD.
The First Two Episodes
Hinterland has revealed a bit of the story for the first 2 episodes of Wintermute. The first 2 revolve around bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood. In episode 1 “Do Not Go Gentle” they find themselves separated after a mysterious crash caused by a geomagnetic event. Now deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness, Mackenzie must seek out shelter and attempt to find traces of civilisation.
In episode 2 “Luminance Fugue”, Mackenzie begins to realise the seriousness of the situation this disaster has created. As he builds relationships with other survivors he encounters, he also searches for traces of Greenwood’s location. His grave situation also forces him to confront what he’s willing to do to survive.
The amount of time it will take to complete the 2 episodes does vary due to the game’s open-world aspect. Episodes 3 through 5 will be released throughout the rest of 2017 and into 2018. So, get ready to say goodbye to the sandbox-only gameplay and commence another countdown. The Long Dark will be available on Steam, PS4 and Xbox One upon release.
