The Forest is still a great survival game. But in order for the sequel, Sons Of The Forest to be even better, it has to go a step further with the following things.

This is why The Forest is so successful: The survival title is one of the most popular in the genre currently on the market. The reason for this is very clear; communication between developers and players. But the general premise including the mystery setting á la Lost is decisive.

However, the upcoming sequel Sons Of The Forest, the first trailer of which aired during the Game Awards 2019, has to stand out from its predecessor to pass as a standalone game. How could developer Endnight Games do this?

These 5 Things Sons Of The Forest Must Do Better

1. The technology

That’s the problem: What is clearly at the top of the list of community requests is a fancier look. It’s very chic in The Forest, but not always free from defects. But not only the general look is out of date, but especially the rather loveless animations also take away the players’ immersion.

This is how it can get better: The movements in the first The Forest not only felt as if we had no hip joint, they also looked rigid and loveless. The Forest 2 definitely has to improve on this. In combat, too, striking weapons appeared unsatisfactorily weak or slow. A lot would be done here with smooth animations and a more up-to-date graphics engine.

2. The hit feedback

That is the problem: The unclean animation of the strikes in The Forest also results in poor hit feedback and hit query.

This is how it can get better: The recently released nomad survival game Last Oasis shows that you can conjure up a sophisticated combat system even with minimalist means in the survival genre. The aforementioned animations also play an important role in hit feedback. The opponents should adapt their reaction to the part of the body hit.

3. The game world

That’s the problem: The Forest map isn’t necessarily too small, even if that’s the general consensus. The bigger problem that I and many other players see is the credibility of the world.

A snowy, high mountain just 100 meters from the fern-covered forest floor and sunny beaches doesn’t necessarily add to the realism.

This is how it can get better: The map doesn’t have to get much bigger, just more realistic. Using real islands as a model could be enough to create a believable world. Hawaii is very chic.

4. The building system

That’s the problem: building in The Forest can quickly become a horror. With the help of transparent 3D templates, you can set up walls, fences, workshops or finished houses.

The problem with this is that in a video game you are not really in the third dimension. By looking at a flat monitor, it is not clear whether the transparent template would be placed exactly where you want it to be.

But even creating constructs on uneven surfaces could quickly drive players to white heat. Especially when it comes to smaller fences or you wanted to set up a house wall with a custom design, it was fiddly.

This is how it can get better: how about a split view instead? In the survival book a bird’s eye view, with which the player position and the surrounding props such as trees or rocks are recorded. Add the familiar 3D view and the new building system is ready. A good example is the medieval survival MMO Life is Feudal.

5. The crafting in The Forest

That is the problem: The countless crafting recipes that you learn in The Forest invite you to try them out, but at a certain point the inventory is full. Especially newer players can quickly lose track of things.

This is how it can get better: Players should be able to arrange the objects themselves on the tarpaulin with which the inventory is displayed. Green Hell sets a good example here.
